LCHS Football Coach vows to use Nickel Defense until Nickel Tax is passed

October 3, 2022

By: Chip McCoy

Following last Friday’s 13-10 Victory over the Boyd County Lions, Lawrence County Football Head Coach Alfred Tall came away impressed with more than just his team’s performance. Despite the result, the MVP of the night was the Boyd County High School facilities and academic campus.

Coach Tall was quoted after the game as saying, “It really puts it into perspective what Boyd County was able to accomplish with their Nickel Tax. They have been able to invest in updating and enhancing their facilities in order to help their students face an ever-changing world full of challenges and obstacles previous generations couldn’t have envisioned.”

In an effort to support the cause of passing the Nickel Tax, Coach Tall has committed his defense to only playing in a Nickel formation until the citizens of Lawrence County pass the Nickel Tax to help fund education. A risky move as the Bulldogs are poised to make a deep run into the State Play-offs.

Lawrence County Superintendent Donnie Belcher, who has long been an advocate for the Nickel Tax to remedy the rising cost of maintaining the aging infrastructure of some of the school system’s facilities, has directed all sports venue PA systems and bands to only perform Nickelback songs until the Nickel Tax gets community support. A tactic which was successful in Johnson County.

Under the Nickel Tax, for every $100,000 a property is valued at its owner will pay just shy of $4.17 per month to fund education in Lawrence County, which is less than a Big Mac Meal from McDonald’s. The state of Kentucky would effectively match the funds raised by the Nickel Tax, doubling the amount the citizens of Lawrence County invest in their own children’s education.

When asked to respond to how he would feel if none of the money went into football facilities, Coach Tall replied, “I would feel fantastic. I don’t want to live in a county full of dumb people. Let’s fund education. Football is secondary to raising these kids to be successful and upstanding young men and women.”

The use of the Nickel Defense and playing Nickelback songs during all time-outs is set to begin at this Friday’s home game against Pike County Central.

Time-Out From Comedy:

First off, clearly not my best article…I initially leaned way more into Nickelback puns and, like Nickelback, it was just terrible… but they all can’t be winners.

That being said, The Big Sandy Lazer fully supports funding education and any program that will benefit the students of Lawrence County. The math in the article is roughly correct, by the way.

If the Nickel Tax were to pass, for every $100,000 your property is valued at you would pay about $4.17 per month. That is a very small price to pay to enhance the education of Lawrence County’s students, and the best thing is the funds raised by the Nickel Tax are matched by the state.

Possibly even better, those funds cannot be siphoned off to some other entity. The funds will be spent to benefit our children and their education.
